He was born in Joplin, Missouri.  He was one of the original writers of the Harlem Renaissance. He published his first book of poetry in 1926.  In 1926, Hughes also published a critical essay, "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain," which became an important piece for the Harlem Renaissance movement. He went on to write many novels, short stories, poetry, plays, autobiographies, and nonfiction works.
