| She was one of the most widely known African American women of the twentieth century. She was an educator, political advisor, and civil rights leader. She accomplished many things in her life. She founded the Dayton Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in a small rented cabin, and continued to develop the school over the next two decades. She also, founded the McLeod Hospital to serve the community and provide training for black physicians and nurses. Later, she founded the National Council of Negro Women and served as president until 1949. |
